Is a UK Sailing Cruise Worth It? Our Honest Experience

For years, we thought cruises were all about flying somewhere warm before stepping aboard a ship. Then we discovered UK sailings.

Instead of airport queues, baggage restrictions and flight delays, we drove to Southampton, parked the car and stepped straight onto our cruise ship.

After recently sailing from Southampton on MSC Virtuosa Yacht Club, here's our honest take on whether a UK sailing cruise is actually worth it.

What Is a UK Sailing Cruise?

A UK sailing cruise simply means your cruise begins from a UK port, usually Southampton.

Rather than flying to Barcelona, Athens or Miami, you travel to the port and board the ship there.

Popular cruise lines offering UK sailings include:

  • MSC Cruises

  • P&O Cruises

  • Cunard

  • Princess Cruises

  • Norwegian Cruise Line

  • Celebrity Cruises

Many itineraries visit destinations such as:

  • France

  • Spain

  • Norway

  • The Canary Islands

  • Northern Europe

Some are short weekend breaks, while others can last several weeks.

The Biggest Advantage: No Airport Stress

This was the biggest surprise for us.

Normally a holiday starts with:

  • Airport parking

  • Security queues

  • Delays

  • Baggage restrictions

  • Early alarms

With a UK sailing, we simply packed the car and drove to Southampton.

Within a couple of hours of arriving, we were onboard, exploring the ship and enjoying our first drink.

The holiday genuinely starts much sooner.

Luggage Is Much Easier

Cruisers love to pack.

Camera gear, evening clothes, multiple outfits, shoes and cruise essentials all add up quickly.

When you're driving to the port, luggage becomes far less stressful.

For content creators like us, being able to bring extra filming equipment without worrying about airline baggage limits was a huge benefit.

Southampton Is Surprisingly Efficient

We expected long queues and a stressful embarkation process.

In reality, we found Southampton extremely straightforward.

The terminal was easy to find, parking was simple and check-in moved quickly.

Of course experiences vary depending on the cruise line and sailing day, but we were impressed with how smooth the process felt.

What About the Downsides?

UK sailings aren't perfect.

The weather can be unpredictable, particularly during the first and last days of your cruise.

You may also spend your first day at sea rather than immediately arriving somewhere warm.

For some travellers, flying to a Mediterranean destination and boarding there may still be more appealing.

However, we found the convenience easily outweighed these drawbacks.

Is Yacht Club Worth It on a UK Sailing?

One thing we really enjoyed was experiencing MSC Yacht Club on a shorter UK sailing.

Because the holiday starts immediately, you get maximum value from the exclusive areas, premium dining and dedicated service from the moment you board.

Even on a shorter itinerary, Yacht Club felt like a genuine upgrade.

Our Verdict

Would we book another UK sailing?

Absolutely.

The convenience alone makes it incredibly appealing.

Being able to drive to the port, avoid the airport experience and begin your holiday almost immediately creates a much more relaxed start to the trip.

For first-time cruisers, we think a UK sailing is one of the easiest and least stressful ways to experience cruising for the first time.

If you've never considered sailing from Southampton before, it might be the perfect way to discover whether cruising is right for you.
